Gary J. Sbona Honors Program

The Gary J. Sbona Honors Program is the Lucas College of Business special course that can be taken for two semesters by any business student who is able to fulfill the application criteria. The purpose of this program is to have the students experience consultancy work and complete full scale marketing and data analytics projects in an unstructured learning environment. The projects given to the students provide real value to our community as the projects were from local companies/organizations working with SJSU.

My role during my time with the Sbona Honors Program was as the Team Lead. My team was tasked with producing a rebranding/new marketing strategy for a local nonprofit, Recovery Cafe. My responsibilities consisted but were not limited to leading team meetings, creating progress reports for the client, setting overall team strategies, and communicating with the client directly, along with producing tangibles with the team.

Our project was divided into five distinct phases to focus our efforts into one specific strategy for that phase and allow each phase to build off the previous. This provided logical progression through the project that the team and client-organization were able to follow easily.

Phase 1: Market Research

Surveyed previous Recovery Cafe donors to derive insights of common motivators for donating and how they subjectively view Recovery Cafe. Results: Created a list of questions for additional data collection and uncovered some initial motivators for donations, along with creative imagery associated with Recovery Cafe.

Phase 2: Data Validation

Sent the new survey containing questions built from previous answers of donors, in order to confirm our insights and assumptions. Results: Determined the next plan of action was to create video testimonials for new marketing materials. The team devised interview questions for developing a logical and emotional theme for each interviewee.

Phase 3: Testimonial Creation

The team contacted Recovery Cafe Board Members to create new testimonials to be used for marketing materials and add to the current Recovery Cafe website. Results: Drafted three testimonials. One former member turned board member of Recovery Cafe, the current treasurer of Recovery Cafe, and the local City Council member Raul Peralez.

Phase 4: Website Design

After the creation of three high profile testimonials and approved by the client-organization, the team moved to producing a plan for implementing the testimonials into the existing website. The team drafted summaries for each page and decided to divide the new web page into three distinct testimonial pages. One of the members, one for board members or employees, and one for donors and community supporters. Results: Created an implementation plan for Recovery Cafe to follow in order to quickly incorporate the testimonials on their website.

Phase 5: Final Reporting and Debriefing

The final phase of the project was to draft the final report for our faculty advisors and for the client-organization, Recovery Cafe. We outlined in our final report each phase’s objectives, successes, failures, and results of our work. During our initial market research phase, the team was able to make contact with a San Jose donor who was in the middle of establishing a Recovery Cafe in Santa Cruz, California. The team was able to make an abridged report (the file attached to this webpage) to help that Recovery Cafe improve their marketing efforts. Our own San Jose Recovery Cafe client-organization was pleased with our work and proposed that our work be showcased and given to Recovery Cafes all throughout the country through their distributed resource library.

  • My team and I also gave our final presentation to various marketing classes as SJSU, as per a request from our faculty advisors, to help showcase how to development strategic implementation plans for new marketing ventures.
